1. Mission-- The Tactical Media Group was formed in Fall 2005 to promote awareness and understanding of media and technology policy. We will engage area communities through educational initiatives in that arena with an eye towards fostering social activism and using media and technology to help bridge the digital divide. "In a world where the expression of political power and control -- tyranny and exploitation --are accomplished through the complex manipulation of symbols, new collaborations and approaches to education, media production and distribution are possible and necessary."

What is Downloading & Uploading?
Downloading- is the transmission of a file from one computer system to another. From the Internet user's point-of-view, to download a file is to request it from another computer (or from a Web page on another computer) and to receive it.
Uploading- is transmission in the other direction: from one, usually smaller computer to another computer. From an Internet user's point-of-view, uploading is sending a file to a computer that is set up to receive it.

What is embedded media?
You may have viewed web pages that have movies or animation that display within a portion of a Web page rather than in a separate application. Animation, audio, video, or other media that is displayed within a Web page is known as embedded media. Embedded media in webpages allows the delivery of an integrated multimedia experience that appears seamless to the user.

ii. Participatory (use of video for onsite playback)
What is Paticipatory Video?

Participatory Video (PV) is a set of techniques to involve a group or community in shaping and creating their own film. The idea behind this is that making a video is easy and accessible, and is a great way of bringing people together to explore issues, voice concerns or simply to be creative and tell stories. It is therefore primarily about process, though high quality and accessible films (products) can be created using these methods if that is a desired outcome. This process can be very empowering, enabling a group or community to take their own action to solve their own problems, and also to communicate their needs and ideas to decision-makers and/or other groups and communities. As such, PV can be a highly effective tool to engage and mobilise marginalised people, and to help them to implement their own forms of sustainable development based on local needs.

Why do it?:
PV carried out in this way becomes a powerful means of documenting local people’s experiences, needs and hopes from their own perspectives. It initiates a process of analysis and change that celebrates local knowledge and practice, whilst stimulating creativity both within and beyond the community. PV gives a voice and a face to those who are normally not heard or seen, even in participatory programs.
iii. Digital stories
What is Digital Storytelling?
Digital Storytelling is the art of turning a personal narrative into a multimedia experience. It can combine music, video and/or still images with your creative voice. The results are an original production that engages the viewing audience in ways that are often surprising and powerful. Advancements in technology have given everyone the opportunity to be a digital storyteller for a online, world-wide audience.

Why do it?:

Digital storytelling can be used to introduce or reinforce the power of writing. Through the writing process and its refinement, students often discover the power of personal expression and greater creativity with digital tools at their aid.
iv. Low-end video conferencing
What is Video Conferencing?
Videoconferencing technology allows people at two or more locations to see and hear each other at the same time. Although videoconferencing has been in existence for quite some time, availability of cost-effective methods of transmission were limited.
Recently, through the emergence of video support software for transmission over the internet, and the rapid development of wide availability of broadband communications, video over the internet (also sometimes referred to as video over IP) has begun to transform the potential for videoconferencing from an expensive, large corporation luxury to a widely available tool for personal and business collaboration.
How do I do it?:
By registering and participating on Video Conferencing Sites.
For a list of sites go to: http://www.blinklist.com/tag/web%20conferencing/
Why Video Conference?
Perhaps the biggest advantage or benefit video conferencing has to offer is the ability to meet with people in remote locations without incurring travel expenses or other expenses associated with face to face communication. Business meetings, educational meetings, healthcare conferences and more can all be easily conducted thanks to video conferencing technology. Individuals living in remote areas can also use video conferencing to keep in touch if you will, with the world at large.
More people are easily accessed and contacted using video conferencing. Because of this technology information and knowledge are often disseminated at more rapid rates, and collaboration between people occurs more willingly and freely. Students can take advantage of video conferencing to take classes at distant locations that would normally be unavailable. They can also take classes that will accommodate busy schedules.
Video conferencing can stimulate better brainstorming, knowledge sharing and information gathering. Businesses can use video conferencing to provide presentations to key members of an organization or to solicit new clients in a professional manner, regardless of their location. The possibilities for communication are virtually endless thanks to video conferencing technologies.
